Thank you very much. hummm... best tip for drawing figures/faces in general I'd say would be draw from life/photos and avoid male models mostly (they are too perfect featured XD)
Once you're comfortable enough with realism, start mixing in a style ^^

I am in love with this artwork. The textures are so realistic and I love how you changed the focus of the image to center the viewers focus on different areas of the face and body. The shadowing of the face looks so natural and the hair is unbelievable. I love the detail and realism of the jacket. Overall a great piece of work, keep doing what you doing because you are great at it.

This is really, really, really, really beautiful! I love how his clothes look heavy and the fur so soft. The skin looks beautiful with all those different tones and colors... really it's to die for! xD
Also on a more curious note, I wonder if you could refer me to a tutorial on how to do such realistic clothing? ( if you've used one, that is ) ;u; I'm dying to know the process to these!

Oh! I'm also curious to know if you perhaps used greyscale before coloring it? Or did you paint it with colors already? ;u;

Thank you so very much for the lovely words.
I'm afraid I didn't record my process for this but I'm trying to write a tutorial for the book this picture is from.
If you are interested, I highly recommend Ctrl+paint. It's a tutorial site that's free and covers all full grounds from line control to perspective to composition to digital painting XD
I'm self taught so I'm always on the lookout for tutorials and I've always loved that series ^^

And to answer your question, I usually prefer going straight to colour (this was straight to colour) but greyscale is good for getting to understand your lighting and values XD

Oh thanks a lot of the recommendation. ^^ I'm definitely going to take a look at these videos. Also would you know some art book titles you think are good? c:

So you think learning from greyscale first is best? ;u; I'm really new to digital painting so I'm trying to gather some info from the experts. xD

You're very welcome. As for books, actually my friend Qinni-chan wrote a journal on the books she'd recommend which I also highly recommend:
Art + Anatomy book Recommendations15 books I recommend for anatomy, art fundamental study and art inspiration. Please note that these are simply my personal recommendations and books that's helped me a lot in the past.
I've taken photos for these books, so Here's a less image-heavy list (on tumblr)
This took so much longer than I first anticipated so I really hope people find this helpful cause, seriously, spending 3 days on this does not feel like it was worth it ^^;
edit: I'm putting the tl;dr list here first as a preview of the books I'm recommending.

TL;DR List of books
Anatomy Books
An Atlas of Anatomy for Artists :star:
The Art of Animal Drawing :star:
Anatomy for the Artist

All are fantastic <3

If you are starting out, yes, definitely start with greyscale. Do tons and tons of greyscale studies and don't worry about colouring them later at all, leave them greyscale. If you are learning digital Painting, it is also very important to learn HOW to use the digital software first rather than be creative. So don't do creative stuff, do still life/photo studies. That way you are not only learning extremely valuable observation skills such as form, shape, composition, material surfaces and light, but you are also learning the practical skill set of digital painting and getting to explore the methods that you are comfortable with. Adding creativity to that list will only lead to great frustration because you are starting to learn, you need the skill set first.
Actually, I was interviewed about this not long ago so there are more tips and advice here if you'd wish to read ^^; :

Manga - Artist Interviews and Features #1Hello everyone! This weeks interviews are with :iconmellanthe:Mellanthe and :iconnegshin:Negshin!
Interview with :iconmellanthe:Mellanthe

Have you ever studied Art at school or University? Are you self taught?
Actually, much like a lot of other artists on DA I am self taught. Haha, I basically learned through trial and a lot of error!
What appealed to you the most about being an artist? Where does your inspiration come from?
What appealed to me the most would have to be being able to put my imagination down on paper. That and bright colours. REALLY. BRIGHT. COLOURS. A lot of my inspiration comes from the Tales Series games actually which many people really wouldn't notice unless they looked really closely.
What genres and styles you use? Why draw Manga?
I mainly draw in manga/anime style with a hint of semi-realism at times, but people rarely

Oh thank you very much once again! c:
I'm definitely looking into getting these books and working my skills properly. ;u;
Also really interesting reading your interview! And what you said definitely made sense. xD starting out and going straight to creative drawing was a big failure for me! I got so frustrated I never finished anything because I just didn't know how to. xD so I ended up posting practically nothing on here. So I'll definitely be taking this advice to heart from now on. :3

please just take it slow and take your time to learn solid skill set, have fun and best of luck to you <3
